Changes..

I still have a blog..
Apart from that, a lot has changed. For one, Soosh and I broke up, and I’m living in Curacao again. Still working on finishing my new appartment, but at least the big parts are done. The todo list so far:

  • Put foil on the windows to keep the sun out
  • Something to keep the mosquitoes out
  • Cleanup the back porch
  • Fix the “kitchen” area
  • And probably lots more. But for now, let’s keep it at that! :)

    Back to work!

Holiday over, so back to work again.. :)

    Some days off..

    Always useful, and fun!

Finally some time to sort out various stuff, like tons of junk on my fileserver :) The good thing is I found some pictures, which I’ve uploaded to The Gallery.Unfortunately the short holiday is almost over..
    Can’t have it all, I guess :)
Hm. And I need to update this more often. Nearly no posts, even nothing on the latest trip to Curacao! Oh well.

    Traffic

    20 September, 2008 (17:34) | Curacao | No comments

Lately, I noticed this site eating more bandwidth than usual. After a quick look at the stats, I saw why: Apparently, somebody linked to a 150M movie file I’ve stored ages ago. Yay for doing 3 times more traffic than usual :)

On a sidenote, I noticed some streams are quite popular these days.. At least it makes my server feel more useful!

    IPMI

    24 August, 2008 (22:10) | Hardware | No comments

After playing with IPMI on one of our new Dell servers at the office, I decided it would be a very useful addon to The Colo Machine. For less than E50, I found a card compatible with my motherboard, that macTijn and I installed today.

So far it works, we’re able to access the serial console through the network, and send the obvious power on/off/cycle commands. The Java tool (IPMIView) that comes with the card doesn’t seem very stable, or fast. The ’speed’ thing goes for the card too, unfortunately.

I’m not too happy that SuperMicro delivers the cards ‘blank’, but I’m guessing that’s because they use the same card for different motherboards, which need their own firmware. Or such. Chances are things might improve after we put in a more recent firmware version (which I haven’t found yet), but for now, “it just works”. :)

    More changes

    Just finished some cleaning up..
For the record (mainly my own):
    - Removed WeatherIcon thingy (the weather sucks here anyway..)
    - Removed useless whitespace between links
    - Moved the Comic-links to an integrated page
    - Changed the order of sidebar links in general

    Some updates

    27 July, 2008 (19:09) | Software | No comments

I finally spent some time on upgrading this thing.. Turned out not to be too hard, even with a bunch of updated plugins! Looks like nothing died (right away), so I might have time to update my blog with actual posts as well ;)

    Trip!

    29 January, 2008 (13:02) | Curacao | No comments

Ok, so, against all advice, I’m trying to go to the US this Wednesday. My passport is still damaged, and Homeland Security has advised me on multiple occasions that I should not travel to the United States with that document. Anyway. The Company still wants me to try. Worst case, I’ll be on the next flight back to Curacao (which is true ;). Let’s see how that goes!

    Dinner

    23 January, 2008 (22:51) | Curacao | No comments

Nothing much happened today. The container is still planned to leave Tortola the 25th, destination Kingston and onwards to Curacao. ETA yet unknown, I’ll try and get that as soon as possible from the shippers though..

In other news, I had a nice dinner with a friend, and afterwards made this picture in front of “my temporary house”. Too bad the clear full moon wasn’t cooperative, I guess I really need something to stabilize that camera.

    Nightmare

    21 January, 2008 (19:41) | Work | No comments

Ofcourse it wouldn’t be a real monday, if it wasn’t for a little trouble. Or actually, a lot, in this case. For some reason, the EVDO system went down, so none of the residential customers had internet access. After some hours of physical tracerouting, changing cables, switches, configs, etc, we figured out what the problem was. Apparently, someone found it necessary to pass all traffic through 2 small happyhub-style 5 port Netgear switches. Right. One of which appeared dead, but not completely. A little fiddling later, we blamed the powersupply. Once replaced, life was good again, yay!

Obviously, the broken adapter had its punishment after a colleague and I “treated” it with 2 rusty old hammers. In the end, that silly thing costed us all morning. To be honest, it was the lack of documentation and reverse engineering that took the most time, but that would be much less fun to blame (and more painful for a certain person .. ;)
